Dar did not return last night

I had a lonely night. No tv or video games, No Dar to curl up to. Mom came in at 4:30am to feed me – canned cat food – heaven. When mom came home from work she and dad did some talking on the phone, sounded like Dar was doing fine, stopped at Mic’s house last night, and then drove in a car caravan back to Lubbock today. Dar had some car trouble. Mom called him and learned that he had been in Drive2 going 60 mph on the highway and for 30 seconds thought the car was going to explode! When he pulled over, Mic came from her car and asked what was wrong. Dar was on the phone to dad at the time and missed hearing her voice say through the window that he was in the wrong gear for high speed driving. Smart Girl! She will go far in the human world!

After her phone conversations, mom played with me for quite awhile, then had to run some errands. She tried to talk to me and explain what was going on. I looked interested but my main concern was getting that canned cat food.

One annoying habit mom has is the demand that I not bite her! Doesn’t she know that I am trying to get her attention to provide whatever it is that I want? She has insisted that I rub against her leg if I want to be fed. I have even started to give my tiny meow (it is embarrassing to have such a puny meow, but I lived on my own for so long and was in fear for my life on many occasions. I wasn’t very trusting of humans, or dogs, or cars…).

Mom found a bouncy ball and I could not resist chasing it! She told me that Dar had always wanted a brave cat that would chase balls and toy cars… but neither of the previous family cats had had the courage to chase (I think it was because they were both girl cats, you know how girls are). The more recent cat, Emma, did like to play with grasshoppers, scoop them up in her paws and fling them into the air, chasing them as they flew through the air. I think I would have liked Emma! But she missed the point of hunting, which is to eat what you catch.

Day One

Today Dar left for lunch, but he didn’t come back! He tried to explain to me that he had to go back to college and that I couldn’t come along. Actually, I pretended that I didn’t understand the “back to college” part since I did not want to spend 8 hours in that cage in that car (Lubbock is a long way from Pflugerville. You do know that Texas is a big state). Don’t spread it around, but I had an accident on the drive down in December and had a quick bath in a gas station restroom, and then a real bath at Mic’s house.

Then it was on the road again to reach Dar’s parents house. That was so scarry, big, light, noisy with greetings, hectic with unpacking the car. Finally I found a tear in the underside of the sofa and squeezed into the lining, perfect hammock for a smallish cat! Boy did I fool everyone. Dar and mom spent hours looking for me in the house and outside in the cold and dark. Finally Dar reached his long arm under the sofa to feel the sagging material again and felt me sleeping in my hammock. It was an ordeal to get me out, and then I was locked into Dar’s room for the night. Luckily I had food, water, and my toilet. Plus, I got to sleep on Dar’s big bed with the flannel quilt. (Dar and mom put a box with a board on top to cover the hole in the lining, so I’ve lost my best hiding place ever! Drat!) I also had to adjust to new voices, and new routines!
You see, in the beginning, Dar was a young human, living with other young humans, and could fit in perfectly with a nocturnal feline’s lifestyle. We used to stay up late, studying, playing video games, and watching old episodes of “24”. It was a great life.
Dar had found me quite by accident, wandering through the yard of his rental house. I started sleeeping in the crawl space under the house. It was fairly safe, and Dar would feed me! How could I lose. Well, December arrived and freezing North winds blew right through the small hole I’d found in the crawl space. Plus, with regular meals I was quickly approaching the point of being too big for the small hole. Dar took me in for a few days, and then we took the drive across Texas, and arrived at my current,  temporary home. In fact, mom created this blog for me to remind Dar that I’m waiting for him, and counting the days when I can come live with him again. In the meanwhile, mom is giving me some schooling of my own! I will be a great cat when Dar sees me next. What mom doesn’t know is that I will revert to my old ways once I am with my nocturnal young human!
By the way, I am a striking young cat, with symmetrical stripes on my front legs. And I have gained weight with my new diet including canned cat food.
